Stay Engaged in Your Community, Friends & Family
The Social Pillar of Care reminds us that strong connections with family, friends, and community are essential to overall well-being. Social support protects mental health, helps prevent depression, and builds resilience against compassion fatigue, also known as secondary PTSD. Did you know that many of us direct all their energy to others, lose boundaries, or feel responsible for everyone’s happiness. Over time this can lead to empathy strain, numbness, or desensitization—warning signs that your window of tolerance is narrowing.
In fact, finding the sweet spot between being on edge and being disengaged helps you stay connected without burning out. Notice new behaviors, emotional reactions, or physical symptoms that may signal stress. Building and maintaining healthy relationships requires intention. Reach out to others, rebuild social routines, and re-engage in hobbies that bring you joy. Assess your social network—do you have someone to confide in, call for help, or share your accomplishments with? If not, it is time to reconnect. Lastly, fight against social isolation through community engagement and by nurturing the relationships that remind you that you are valued and never alone.
